June/July 2015

The racing season is fast coming to an end and astute trainers are placing their horses to their best advantage, given that the higher profile contenders have mostly been spelled with a view to the next season.

Our Owners of the Month for June were: Nathan Hurst, Ray Grubb and Dean Latter.

Nathan, who always has a large team in work, is based at Eglington in the Central West of NSW. He shared in the ownership of three winners of 4 races in June, at Peak Hill and Bathurst, namely Blazing Brax, Tulhurst Ace and Tulhurst Sarsha.

Ray Grubb, who hails from Sutton, has been a long time member of our Association and an even longer time supporter of Harness Racing, through his Stud Farm, Sutton Lodge.

Ray won several races at Menangle with Bettor Believe It, one of which was in 1.53.8. Her stakes won now exceeds $100,000.

Dean Latter, our third recipient is one of our latest members and won two races with Justa Glamour at Tamworth and Newcastle. Well done Dean.

Our Owners of the Month for July were: Reg Walsh, Kirsty Formosa and Wayne White.

Reg has been an Owner/Breeder for many years and always has his share of winners. In this month they were Most Admired and Rodney Strides, both at Penrith.

Kirsty Formosa, is the wife of Ellalong trainer, Michael Formosa, and has enjoyed much success in recent times particularly with Ultimate Art, who was a Group 3 winner at Menangle in July. Other successes came via Ultimate Trump at Tamworth, and we hope Kirsty is sharing the winnings!

Out third winner is Oberon based member Wayne White, whose mare Miss Rodriquez won her first race at Bathurst. This handy mare has had 12 starts for a win and six places and hopefully more success is on the way.

We would suggest that everyone view our website to update on upcoming benefits, such as the Owners Bonus Series which begins with the Bathurst meeting on 9th September.

Financial members can also share in our Awards Night at Menangle on 10th October after taking part in our AGM that afternoon. Any member and partner can attend this function free of charge, so now is the time to join or renew your membership. Download a membership form or apply online.

Owners Bonus Race Series

The NSWSOA wish to advise that the following venues and race dates will formulate the Owners Bonus Series for 2015.

The Series will be held as follows:

  • Bathurst - 9th September 2015

  • Wagga - 18th September 2015

  • Parkes - 20th September 2015

  • Menangle - 22nd September 2015

  • Newcastle - 10th October 2015

  • Young - 16th October 2015

  • Penrith - 22nd October 2015

  • Dubbo - 31st October 2015

The bonuses attached to these meetings will be $500 paid direct to winning owners plus a $500 Bonus Certificate issued by HRNSW. This Bonus Certificate can be used in multiple ways such as a sustaining payment for the Breeders Challenge; towards the service of a Breeders Challenge eligible stallion standing in NSW; or can be transferred to another person to be used as above.

To be eligible for the Bonus, the managing owner must be a member of the Owners Association when the horse is nominated for the event.

This is an opportunity for members to share in the benefits of membership in our Association with previous winning bonuses totalling in tens of thousands.

Our Association would like to acknowledge the support of the participating Clubs and HRNSW in the conducting of this Series.

Annual membership of our Association is $50, and membership forms may be downloaded from our website.

April 2015

April wasn't hard to find our first nomination in the guise of prominent owner/breeder John Starr. John won 8 races with 6 horses, mainly in country venues with Smiling Cullen, Match in Heaven, Major Lexus, Lexies on the Beach, Star Writer and 2 year old Rock Hand, which won at Penrith on the 30th.

Second nomination for April was Diane Kelly, owner of outstanding mare Frith which was successful at Menangle on Len Smith Mile Day. Other winners for Diane were Lighting Colony and Jessica Amber who both won at their local track at Wagga.

Third nomination for April was Sydney based owner breeder Ray Cahill. Ray has been a member of our Association since its inception and during this time has invested significant funds into both the breeding barn and the sales ring. Symbolic of his dedication to the sport is his success at Penrith on 2nd of the month with a 9 year old gelding Rojam Cullen. Well done RAY!

In conclusion I would advise that significant progress has been made in the organisation of a Ready to Run Sale to be conducted on 6th December 2015. This activity is a joint venture between the NSW Owners Association and Harness Breeders NSW, with the support of HRNSW and the NSW Harness Racing Club, and further information will be available as soon as possible.

March 2015

The monthly meeting of the Owners Association Committee was held on the 4th May and some spirited discussions took place covering a number of issues effecting Harness Racing in NSW. There were also some significant decisions taken that effect our members, none moreso than the decision to again run the Owners Bonus Series in conjunction with a number of Clubs and with the support of HRNSW.

This series can generate bonuses up to $1000 for our members, payable directly to the owner, and due to be conducted in September and October 2015. More information will be provided closer to the commencement of the Series.

Voting for Owners of the Month for March and April was also on the agenda and some of our members had outstanding months.

Prominent Trotting enthusiast Pat Driscoll led the way in March winning six races with 4 horses, namely Arboe, EdgeHill, Agent Maori and My Valerie, all trained and driven by Blake Fitzpatrick.

Well known owner Theo Papadopoulis was no doubt elated with the performance of his outstanding young pacer, Artistic Flite which won 3 races. One at Newcastle and two at Bathurst during the Gold Crown Carnival, when trained by Shane Tritton and driven by Lauren Panella.

Out third nomination for March was prominent owner trainer Ray Walker who races predominantly in the Riverina. Ray won 3 races in March with 3 different horses, namely Glenhaven Cheeky, Glenburn Anna and Bell Ringer.

February 2015

Owners of the month in February 2015 were:

Cheryl McDowell with Highest Mountain, Chevals Charlie, Maximiser, Butterfly Princess recording wins.

Paul Kahlfeldt winning with Mayor Kiwi, Bad Habbott, Miss Ponder and Zenable.

John O'Sullivan with Harlequin Bromac and Hezbuyin Diamonds each recording two wins during the month.

The association lodged its submission to the New South Wales governments proposed review of the Harness Racing Act 2009.

The Association has confirmed its intention to run the Bonus race series again in 2015. It is intended for the series to be run in September/October 2015 so as to avoid clashing with NSW Breedes Challenge heats and finals and the carnival of cups races. The proposed timing early in the 2015/2016 racing season will give ample time for finalisation of the programme and for trainers to mark their calendars accordingly.

In conjuction with the Breeders NSW HRNSW and the principal club this association is finalising planning for the continuation of the successful ready to run sale. Confirmation and details of this event are scheduled to be announced at the end of the March.

The outcomes from the Participants meeting held at Penrith Paceway have been forwarded to the Board of Harness Racing NSW following endorsement by HRICG in February 2015. Actions following the review by the Board will be announced in due course.

January 2015

NSWSOA are pleased to announce the Owners of the Month for January 2015.

Leading the list are Emilio and Mary Rosati who managed to win 7 races with 5 horses including All Eyes on Us, Padabing Stride, SnoopStride and Mister Cool Stride.

Peter Green had a very successful month winning 4 races with 3 horses, namely Fourstazzspecial, Starzzinthenight, and Our Artistic Leigh. Given that Peter breeds most of his horses this is a very satisfactory outcome.

Our third recipient is original Association member Wayne Honan, who won 2 races with Sarah Joy and Say it isn't So. Wayne has maintained the family interest in Harness Racing in both racing and breeding to sell, and the farm has produced many outstanding horses over the years including Flightpath who is now creating a successful career in the breeding barn.

Our Association wishes any members with horses in the upcoming InterDominion Carnival the very best of luck.

It's been a full on month for the Owners Association, culminating with the conduct of the consultation meeting of participants on 18th January 2015. This meeting was convened to allow those who attended the opportunity to voice their opinions about the handicapping and programming changes introduced by HRNSW from the beginning of September 2014. There were over 60 attendees and they came from as far as Wagga, Goulburn, Bathurst and many points in between.

To all those people the Owners Association extends its appreciation. Whilst changes introduced from 1st January 2015 by HRNSW alleviated some of the major issues there were a number of other considerations raised that are currently being formatted for submission to HRNSW and hopefully some measure of resolution can be achieved. We will endeavour to update everyone as circumstances permit.

The owners of the month for December 2014 were Rod Smith, who won 5 races with 5 horses and Julie Smith who shared in the ownership of 4 winners of 4 races. The level of support this couple provide Harness Racing with their breeding, racing and sponsorship is second to none. Our third winner for December 2014 was new member Grant Fuller. Grant was successful with Fuller A Cee at Bathurst, Better than Max at Newcastle and Fuller Vee Em at Maitland on 28th and these have carried forward their good form. To all three we extend our heartiest congratulations.
