November 2014

The NSWSOA recently conducted its AGM and under its rules of Association half of the Committee were required to stand down and elections conducted to fill the vacancies. As a result the Committee members were re-elected and member Michael Brown was elected to fill a vacancy created by a previous resignation.

Election of office bearers took place and Peter Neil was re-elected as Chairman and Daniel Cordina re-elected as Vice Chairman. Members can be assured that this committee will continue to represent the interests of Owners in NSW in all matters relating to Harness Racing.

One of the tasks of the Committee is to nominate members for the role of Owner of the Month and the three nominations for November were: Shaun Snudden, Robert Allport and Golden Gate Stud Proprietors Wayne and Anne Lamb.

Shaun Snudden is a very successful owner/trainer based in the Riverina and during November he shared in the spoils of three winners, twice with The Brazen Jasper and once each with Barriettas Bliss and Modern Era.

Robert Allport is a long time owner and member and he was fortunate enough to win three races in November with handy performer Modern Dancer, twice in Canberra and once in Young.

Wayne and Anne Lamb have conducted Golden Gate Stud for as long as I can remember and have produced numerous high quality performers over this time. They don't race many themselves but in this month they won three races with Last Flight Out, once at Bathurst and twice at Dubbo, so congratulations to our winners in November.

I would take the opportunity to advise all participants that the Association will be conducting an open forum at Penrith Paceway on Sunday, 18th January, at 1.00pm, in order to obtain feedback regarding the changes to the handicapping/programming system in NSW.

October 2014

October has been a very fruitful month for a number of Owners Association members; none more so than Daniel Cordina who has probably the most promising group of horses he has raced.

Leading the way is Changeover colt Beaudiene Bill, a graduate of the Greg Payne stable from NZ. With 3 wins in the recent month this 3 year old has the ability to go all the way. Other members of the Cordina team to salute are Bad Habbot, Earl of Clevdon and Steffie Rice for a total of 7 wins.

Our second award winner for October is Rutherford resident Gregory Mellington. A new member of this association, Greg won a heat and then the final of the prestigious Canola Cup with the promising Holm Three, with many more wins to come.

Our third winner is Central Coast resident Martin Sieper who won 2 races in October with 2 horses, namely Glencore at Penrith on 30th and long odds winner Cardinal Rule at Menangle on 26th. Cardinal Rule deserves special mention as he is an 11 year old with career stats of 121 starts for 18 wins and 31 places. When he won at Menangle he flew the gate and led all the way going 1.53.7, a truly memorable effort.

Members are reminded that our AGM will be conducted on Thursday 27th November, at the Penrith Paceway Dining Room scheduled to begin at 7pm, procedures will include elections for half of the existing committee so here is an opportunity to take an active role in the management of Harness Racing.

September 2014

The racing season concluded on 31st August and the various awards were presented at our awards night on 20th September. The various winners are listed below can also be accessed on the HRNSW website.

Owners of the year were Marie and Peter Neil racing under the Rayngold brand, and as results determined they followed up with being also named as one of the Owners of the Month for September as a result of winning 5 races with 5 individual horses.

The second nomination for September was Lyn Fitzpatrick with 4 winners of 4 races, three of which saluted at Penrith.

Our third nomination was a new member Richard Camilleri who owned and trained Zany Dune to win at Penrith on 11th September when driven by James Ponsonby.

Congratulations to all!

It is worth noting that members collected $27,000 in bonuses from the latest round of meetings that were part of the Owners Bonus Scheme and it would be remiss of our Association not to recognise the support given by the participating Clubs and HRNSW.

The AGM will be held on 25th November at 7:00pm in the old dining room at Penrith Paceway.

We encourage all members to attend and provide suggestions on how to expand our services. Also, there are several positions on the NSWSOA committee that need to be filled.

August 2014

The Owners of the Month Club reaches its conclusion with August being the end of the racing season.

The nominees for August are all long term harness racing supporters, namely Joe Cordina, Cathy Hewitt and Sue O'Sullivan.

Joe Cordina is the patriarch of that well known clan and has been racing successfully for many years. A lot of his success has been derived from the outstanding mare, Ashlees Babe, which has been the foundation of many of his current winners such as Magic Franco, Gypsy Babe and Real Ambro, all of which saluted in August.

Cathy Hewitt has enjoyed much success over the years and it continued in August winning three races with Magic Trump, Famous Fella and Pass the Magic.

Sue and Frank O'Sullivan need little introduction having bred and raced some outstanding horses over many years and this month they were successful in three races with Lilly Lane and Coonah Parade.

August saw the conclusion of the Owners Bonus Scheme for the season with over $20,000 in bonuses earnt. I'm sure Wayne Dimech is pleased with the outcome having won two $1,000 bonuses for an annual membership fee of $50.

I would draw attention to the fact that the Annual General Meeting set down for the 20th September has been deferred to a date to be released, however our Annual Awards Night and Dinner will still take place as scheduled at Menangle on 20th September.

As soon as a date for the AGM is finalised an announcement will be released.

July 2014

The Owners Association Bonus Scheme is well under way with six of the nine meetings concluded.

Beginning at Menangle on 10th June there were five winners all of whom earnt connections an additional $1000. These winners were: Whereibylong owned by Finian Doyle; Spicy Stride owned by Emilio and Mary Rosati; Lettucrockthem owned by Paul Kahlfeldt; Ocean Diva owned by John Starr; and Markey Oh Markey owned by Rod Smith.

Next up was the Wagga meeting conducted on 27th June which despite being a T3 meeting carried the same level of bonuses. The only winner was Modern Era owned by Shaun Snudden and not being Breeders Challenge eligible only earnt $500.

Parkes was the next venue on 28th June with two $1000 winners namely Flight Express owned by Anne Lamb of Golden Gate Stud and Penny Shannon owned by the Rayngold Syndicate managed by Peter and Marie Neil.

Things hotted up with the Penrith meeting on 10th July, beginning with The Rag Doll owned by the McDowell family earning $1000; Mighty Gift trained by Steve Turnbull for the Johnson family earnt $500; and Starzzinthenight collected $1000 for a syndicate headed by Peter Green. Why Four owned by Scott McDonald rounded out a big night by winning race 7 and earning Scott an additional $1000.

To Newcastle on the 18th July and Ultimate Trump continued Kirstie Formosas's winning spree by winning race 4 and earning an additional $1000, while the only other Bonus earner was Adriatic Coast in race 6 who picked up $500 for West Australian owner Adam Sofoulis.

Dubbo on 20th July turned into a win fest for Association members beginning with Happy Napa in race 2 earning $500 for Frank Hession. Race 4 saw Casino Chimes win for Lester Hewitt and earn $1000, followed by Tulhurst Sarsha winning race 5 and earning connections an additional $1000.

Total Bonuses to date amount to $15,000 with 3 meetings to come; Young on 27th July, Bathurst on 20th August and Bankstown on 28th August. If you are not already a member join now, and don't forget our Annual Awards Dinner which is free to all members and will take place at Menangle on 20th September.

June 2014

The end of the season is fast approaching, and quality racing has been produced in the lead up heats, semi finals and finals of the Breeders Challenge events. The Breeders Challenge Blue Finals will be conducted on the 12th July and this new event for 100% NSW bred has been made possible by the staking of the series by the NSW Harness Racing Club. The running of the Regional Finals at Young on 27th July will be the culmination of what has been a very successful series.

The Association's Owners of the month for June include a cross section of people, some new to Harness Racing and others of long standing.

The first is Finian Doyle, the owner of Group 1 filly, Whereibelong. This outstanding filly won a heat, semi-final and then the final of the Breeders Challenge. By Somebeachsumwhere out of top class mare BylongBele, she has all the characteristics needed to transition into a highly competitive open class mare.

Our second owner for June is Victorian based Adrian Bau, who shares in the ownership of Aspiring Artist, the open class Mach Beauty, and the sub 1.50 winner Suave Stuey Lombo. This is a trio anyone would be proud to share in!!

The third owner for June is owner, trainer, breeder, Glenn Wilmott, who hails from Young in the South West of NSW. Glenn has had an outstanding year with some of his homebreds, namely Mustang Jet and the very promising Casino Grin whose latest win was in the ACT Sapling Stakes. Their performances indicate that next year should be something special.

The Owners Bonus Scheme has produced some pleasing results for our members with 12 bonuses earnt up to the 10th of July. The Menangle meeting on 10th June saw five, $1000 bonuses won followed by one, $500 at Wagga on 27th June. The Parkes meeting on 28th June saw two $1000 bonuses won and Penrith on 10th July saw three $1000 bonuses won as well as one $500 bonus. Thus a total so far of $11,000 in four meetings has been won.

There are five more meetings in the current series, Newcastle on 18th July, Dubbo on 20thJuly, Young on 27th July, Bathurst on 20th August and Bankstown on 28th August.

Remember to be eligible the Managing Owner must be a financial member of the Owners Association when the horse is nominated for the meeting, so join up now.

May 2014

The autumn weather has been superb but even better for our Owners of the Month for May, namely Bradley Hewitt, Lester and Linda Hewitt and Peter Trevor-Jones. Brad Hewitt has had a purple patch of late, winning 7 races with 4 horses; She's All Magic, Spare Me Days, the exciting He's A Dude, and the ever improving I'm Jay Tee. An impressive aspect of this success is the consistency shown by the stable runners.

The Western Districts husband and wife team of Lester and Linda Hewitt won 5 races with 3 horses; Casino Chimes and She's So Foxy at Bathurst and Armbro Chimes at Penrith and Menangle. The latter horse will figure prominently in the upcoming 4 year old division of the Breeders Challenge.

The last recipient for May is the very successful Peter Trevor-Jones with 5 wins with 3 horses including the highly rated Ominous Warning. This 2 year old has gone from strength to strength and will no doubt start a warm favourite in the upcoming Breeders Challenge final for Colts and Geldings. He has speed and stamina and is rewarding his owner for many years of involvement in Harness Racing.

This Association would urge all participants to be aware of the proposed changes to Handicapping and Programming that are proposed to be introduced from the 1st of September 2014. Harness Racing NSW have been conducting road shows to explain the changes which they intend to implement and these changes will have far reaching impact on all participants. Further information can be obtained by contacting HRNSW.

April 2014

The monthly meeting of the NSWSOA Committee was held on 5th May and saw some spirited discussion particularly in regard to the proposed changes to race classifications set to begin in September. It is fair to say that this Associations committee have serious doubts about the potential benefits said to follow the introduction of these changes.

On a lighter note voting was conducted on the nominations for the Owner of the Month for both March and April.

The Owners of the Month of March were firstly Lyn Fitzpatrick who part owns six horses to win eight races, including outstanding filly, Sally Fletcher, who won races at both Penrith and Bathurst. This filly is an APG graduate from the Sydney sales and was purchased for $8000. She will prove to be a very astute purchase.

Second nominee for March is Dianne Kelly, who won five races with four horses including outstanding mare, Frith. Others to win were Stenning, Macca Kelly and Sunshine Hannigan.

Third nominee is Peter Green, who shared in the ownership of three winners of four races including the promising Our Artistic Leigh who won at both Menangle and Newcastle.

First nominee for April was Nathan Hurst who won five races with three horses including the much improved Major Gambler who won twice at Bathurst and once at Menangle.

Second nominee is Pat Driscoll who deserves special notice given the investment he has made in supporting the trotting code. Pat's horses are trained by Blake Fitzpatrick and they won 5 races with 3 horses, most notably with Vincennes at Penrith, Newcastle and Menangle. Pat has invested significant amounts in breeding and buying young trotters and we wish him well.

Third nominee is new member William Buckley who won 2 races with his horse Kinsella at Newcastle. We hope that he continues to be rewarded for his efforts.

In closing I would draw attention to the Owners Bonus Scheme that this Association will be conducting over the next several months. It commences at Menangle on 10th June and all information is available through the Gazette, Trotguide or on the Owners Association website. Several of the meetings included in the series contain T3 races which could be worth $2800 to the winner if it is Breeders Challenge eligible. Now is the time to join to share in the benefits.

Members are reminded that the Association in partnership with the Race Clubs, as per below, together with Harness Racing NSW, will again be offering the Owners Bonus Scheme. This provides Members of the Association to increase their prize money for that race won at those meetings, [As in previous years, to be eligible the managing owner must be a paid up member of this Association when the horse is nominated for the event] together with receiving a monogrammed rug to commemorate such victory.

The members of the Owners Association will be well represented on finals night.

January 2014

The year moves on and more Owners Association members are recognised, this time for the month of January.

Prolific owner John Starr was very successful sharing in the wins of Ocean Diva, twice at Menangle and with Ohyouluckything, at Newcastle and Penrith, Major Lexus at Penrith and Majestic Star at Bathurst.

Riverina owner, trainer Ray Walker had a good January winning with Col Walker at Temora, Glenburn Anna at Wagga and Parkes and with Funny Thoughts at Wagga. For many years now Ray has provided his owners with success and the placement of his horses is a major factor in that success, well done, Ray.

As a committee we try to recognise the achievements of all our members and such is the case with long time association member, Michael McKechnie. Michael is based in the Western Districts and has horses with Kel Winnell and Ian Mutton and was successful at Orange with It's the Promised One.

Michael breeds most of his horses and has 3 mares in foal and he needs all the wins possible, so from our committee we wish him the best of luck.
