December 2013

Apologies are in order for the lateness in notifying owners of the month for December 2013, what with the holiday season and committee members on leave, we didn't meet in January.

However I am most pleased to remedy the situation and announce that HRNSW Board Member Rod Smith is the first nomination for the month.

Rod is a prolific owner and 5 members of his team produced 8 wins during December with the strike rate not slowing into the New Year.

Equally successful was Ray Mawhood who won 7 races with 4 horses. Ray, who hails from Oberon races the majority of his horses in the Western Districts and his strike rate, is very impressive.

Our third recipient is long time member and breeder Ray Grubb, who hails from Sutton, in the Southern Districts. Ray has been breeding and selling yearlings for many years and with great success and the horse to earn him this month's award is the very consistent Better Believe It, who managed 2 wins, both at Menangle.

Many of our members breed to race and so this time of year when the 2 year olds begin to race has a special meaning. As well the yearling sales are upon us and the quality being presented is outstanding.

So to all our Owners, we wish the best of luck, may you continue to meet the challenge and your efforts be rewarded.

November 2013

November is one month of the year when all Harness Racing followers get to see the best available horses racing for the best possible prize money.

With the opening of the new facilities at Menangle it is now possible to indulge in whatever level of participation one can wish for ... click here for more info ...

October 2013

The latter part of the calendar year is one of contrasts.

With the lead ups to the Miracle Mile the focus of metropolitan racing, those high profile horses and their owners assume centre stage, while on the other hand those participants who aspire to reach that level of competition keep working away in the hope of one day reaching those lofty heights.

It is my experience that the thing that inspires people to own and race horses is the dream of that special horse competing at that elite level.

September 2013

Members of the NSWSOA have had good cause to enjoy the Month of September.

The highlight for all was our Annual Members Dinner which followed on from the Annual General Meeting conducted at Tabcorp Park Menangle on 21st September. Apart from the various awards, the draw was conducted for the trip to Las Vegas for two and this was won by Rachelle Corfield who was overjoyed with her success as this will be her first overseas holiday. Congratulations and well done, Rochelle!! ... click here to read more ...

August 2013

Members of the NSW Standardbred Owners Association continue to be rewarded in a number of ways with $19,000 in bonuses earnt in the just concluded series for 2013. For an annual membership of $50 this has to be the best value around.

The Hewitt brothers pulled off the daily double at Bathurst on Wednesday, 17th when David and Mark Hewitt were successful in winning Bonus Races.

David, who trains and drives and is a part owner of the very impressive first race winner, Satin Sea, was a happy recipient of the NSWSOA $1,000 Bonus cheque. Satin Sea will go to Menangle Park to contest a final of the country race series.

Later in the night, Mark Hewitt piloted home Chloes Venture and, being a part owner of the horse with GW Halls and TJ Toole also was the recipient of a NSWSOA $1,000 cheque.

Both horses, being NSW Breeders Challenge eligible, received the full $1,000 Bonus.

July 2013

The month of June sees the culmination of months of planning for Breeders Challenge eligible horses and so it was for a number of Owners Association members.

Prominent amongst these was long time owner/breeder, John Starr, who was fortunate enough to win six races with four horses during the month. Most prominent of these was his part ownership of Group 1 winner, Obhama Joy, who was successful in her age group in the Breeders Challenge Final.

Other winners were the consistent, Ohyouluckything, good class filly Ocean Diva as well as The Redeemer. ... Read more ...

June 2013

The racing season is well into its second half and members of the Standardbred Owners Association have enjoyed many highs and some very sad lows in the past month.

Our Owner's Bonus Scheme is well under way with five meetings so far conducted and bonuses totalling $8000 so far having been earnt. With five more meetings in the current schedule there is still time to share in the benefits available for a modest annual membership of $50. See our website to access joining methods. ... May 2013

The NSWSOA 2013 Bonus Series of meetings got underway at the Dubbo Paceway on Wednesday 1st May, with three lucky owners receiving bonus's. Nathan Hurst was first to receive some money when Mcarmbro NZ won race 2, The NSW Owners Association Pace, collecting $500.

The next owner to collect a bonus was Doug Johnston who picked up $1,000 when his 2yo Might Gift took out The Western Districts Sapling Stakes. After being placed at his previous 6 starts, the colt by Bettors Delight out of Gift of Love, and bred by Eric Basham at Young, appears to be getting stronger with racing. The Johnston family came within a HFHD of picking up another $1,000 bonus when their 3yo, Master Macca, was narrowly beaten by Usher later in the night. ... Read more ...

March 2013

Horse ownership can be a very fickle interest, however when success comes it can be a very rewarding experience.

So it is with our Owners for the month of March, namely Dianne Kelly, Jacquie Gibson and Alan Colwell.

The Kelly family have been breeding and racing winners for decades but it is Dianne who rates one of this month's awards. As the owner of the outstanding filly, Frith, she has experienced the level of success all owners can aspire to.

This filly has been competitive at the highest level, possessed of brilliant gate speed, perfectly mannered and stamina to boot. She is the perfect package. Given the family history she will be an outstanding broodmare and continue the Kelly family story for years to come.  ... Read more ...

February 2013

The month of February provided the lead up to what became an outstanding event with the Interdominion Final on the 3rd of March.

This day provided the opportunity to showcase our sport in a way that has not been seen for years and congratulations go to all concerned.

January 2013

Life has a way of repeating itself and so it is with January's owners of the month.

First of the three nominees is well known owner, Joe Cordina, who managed to win 5 races with 3 horses, namely, Falcon Chief, Gypsy Babe and Major Joy.
